We are Dependent!

Hello Readers!
Here is a poem I wrote about the situation in Pakistan, how we are dependent on Domestic Help to work for us. I had originally decided to write an article on this topic, but when I sat down to write it, I somehow couldn't. So I expressed it in a poem, which I think would also be more interesting than an article.
Hope you like it.
Comments would be appreciated.

A problem we face in this country
Even though we claim to be independent
The truth is that we are not
And are actually more dependent!

Dependent on the servants to sweep our floors,
And the drivers to drive our vehicles
We depend on a Cook to cook our food,
And from a shop we purchase our pickles.

We hire maids to do our housework,
Which includes cleaning, washing and sweeping
We order them about, and while they work,
We ourselves go back to sleeping!

Now, is this routine right, after all?
Is this correct, what we do?
Is it supposed to be this way or not?
And is it fair for them, too?

I certainly think that it is not!
As it's not their fault at all
That they were born in a poor family,
Which was poorer than us, that's all!

We can't blame them for being poor
God decides everything, that's true,
And had he decided to make us like them,
Imagine what would be like, me and you!

We are all equal, in the sight of God,
And He is the Lord of all.
Then why do we act as if we're they're boss?
And are superior, as if they're small

This is a big question, I know it is
And is something to think about.
If you have it's answer, then please do;
Leave a comment regarding it about!

  1. A very beautiful way to express the 'beauties' of our lives! I really liked your poem, but the problem is the implementation..

    1. Thanks! These people should be given opportunities as well, and we shouldn't take their services for granted just because they are poor. Most of them are educated, even.

  2. You have drawn our attention to a very common yet important issue. Having maid, cook or driver is a luxury that we enjoy in Pakistan. Most of the people abroad can't even think of it. They can't afford a single maid. They have to do all the household work themselves along with other responsibilities; e.g. job, raising kids etc etc.

    1. You're right. And in our country, most of these maids are educating their children so for our future generations, their won't be any maids and servants for them since they'd be well educated and won't do any domestic work.

  3. This is a really well written poem, Fatima! It really draws your attention in to people being dependent. In the UK now most people don't depend on maids, cooks, etc. anymore (although you do still find them around, just very few). However, I've noticed it occurs a lot in LEDCs that I've studied/been to and in houses where people are too lazy to actually do anything themselves. You're totally right! The worst of all is Child Labour, which I'm totally against. It's illegal in the UK, but another country I've been to has it, and it's so sad. D: Anyway, keep it up! You're brilliant at writing poems! :D

    1. Thanks! You're good at writing poetry too. Yes, child labour is very wrong. Most of the children who work are usually from poor families, who can't afford to go to school and do not get the chance to do the activities that we do. Fortunately, in Pakistan, there are some schools like TCF (The Citizens' Foundation) and several government schools who provide low cost, or free education. Also, many underprivileged areas are slowly developing, as their government has improved or changed, and they are providing free of cost education and other facilities. True, situation in several countries are really terrible, but there are people working towards it, and Insha Allah it will improve. The main problem is lack of education, and when those countries and their people get educated, I'm sure everything will change.

    2. That's right, and it's both really upsetting and unfortunate. That's great news! But does it mean so far you have to pay to go to most of the schools in Pakistan? Yeah, hopefully things will get better for most of these countries in the future. :D

    3. Yes, so far you have to pay to get to most of the 'good' schools in Pakistan. The 'good' schools are the 'private' ones, which charge expensive fees, promising to provide 'quality education'! It's so ridiculous! :\
The education system in Pakistan isn't very good, which is why many people prefer to go abroad for higher studies if they can afford it.
A few organizations are working towards improving the quality of education in Pakistan, like ERDC (Educational Resource Development Centre), which trains teachers and parents. They've also written many course books for various schools and publishers.
(Sorry if this is totally irrelevent! I just felt like I had to tell you that Pakistan is improving!) =D

    4. Oh. :/ Here in the UK you have to go to school by law until you're of age - and lots who go to school here don't like going. :P (Well, some you can't blame, because of the annoying school rules that exist. I mean, detention? Who invented that? Sounds like something that developed from the Victorian days. >.<) Aw, that doesn't sound good! D: I'd say that's one of the perks of home schooling then! Around where I am, the secondary schools aren't much good either. I wish we had an ERDC around here! Everything would be so much more awesome! :D You're so lucky!
Haha, no it isn't! I'm always into topics debating about school systems. XD

    5. Wait, it's not illegal to be home educated! You either have to do that, or actually go to a school (which most people do).

    6. They do? It's not that strict in Pakistan, but I've heard that in some places it's compulsory to go to school.
Yeah, many of the school rules are really stupid and senseless, detention is a good example! :P Haha, true, it seems like something from the Victorian times! XD
Wait! Secondary schools aren't much good there?! Are you talking about a certain city or all of UK? Because here, everyone thinks that UK is just perfect, and half the people would do anything to go to UK, if they can afford it.
An ERDC in UK! Lol, it is a good idea. I'll tell them about it. :)
Ok, thanks for telling me. :)

    7. Yeah! Oh right! (The problem with it like this in the UK is that there are then issues in school with the people who don't actually want to go to school but have to. Like, big issues. :/)
I know right? :P Yeah! XD Oh, no, definitely not ALL of the UK, haha! XD There are lots of really good private schools, like in Oxford and Cambridge. (Oh... well, there is one secondary school at a really good standard near me, but it's private and... a bit too posh, if you know what I mean. >.<) Yeah, apparently that's true. You hear a lot about people here coming from other countries to study. The one I was talking about even accepts them and lets them board! :) Lol! Well you'd have to live in a really good place to go to a really good one. XD (It's usually really expensive. ;-;)
      Yeah! Seriously, you would? :D
      No problem! :)

  5. Yes our increasing dependence on the domestic help had made us lethargic and crippled, and sadly we're not realizing it.
Your poem would made us realize to do our work preferably with our own hands and without least help.
You can also write a short story or even a novel on this topic.

  6. Mashallah! You have expressed our dependency very interestingly. I liked your poem.
