Some tips and ideas for becoming a writer
Hey there! Here are some tips and ideas for becoming a writer. This text was part of the activity booklet in my workshop, Writing Made Easy. I don't know if I'm the right person to give this advice. After all, I'm not a professional writer myself, and only write because I like to. But I think these tips are more like some motivational ideas to encourage you all to write. They don't tell much about the intricacies of writing, rather, they are some general ideas for anyone who wishes to become more fluent and consistent in their writing.
I hope that this will be helpful and motivating for you. If you'd like to ask me anything about these points or writing in general, please leave a comment below. I'd look forward to any feedback and suggestions, and would also like to know if you have any tips for better writing. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
Happy writing! :D

- Do not hesitate. Write whatever comes to your mind, without worrying about whether it is right or not. Remember that there is no right or wrong in writing. Everything is accepted and appreciated.
- Read. The more books that you will read, the more you will be exposed to a range of writing styles, ideas and perspectives. Read both fiction and non-fiction books, as they would help you develop your own writing style. A writer Pam Allyn once said: ‘Reading is like breathing in, writing is like breathing out.’
- Value your mother tongue. Remember that you will only be able to write well if you are fluent in the language you are writing in. Since most of us think and speak better in our mother tongue, it is likely that we will be able to better communicate our ideas in it. However, there is nothing wrong in learning more languages and writing in them, as they would also help you improve your expression.
- Look back on your writings. A few weeks or months after you have written something, open it and read it once again. It is likely that you will learn a lot just from reading and reflecting upon your old writings. You will see how you have improved, and what you can do to make your writings even better.
- Share your writings with others. Create your blog and post your writings on it. Ask your parents, friends, and family members to visit your blog and comment on them. Their comments will certainly give you more ideas for your work.
- Comment and give feedback on other peoples’ writings. If you have friends who love to write or who post their writings on a blog, then ask them if they’d like some feedback. Tell them what you like about their writing and what they can do to improve it. Giving feedback would not only improve their writing, but would also help improve yours. You would learn a great deal about the dynamics of writing just by thinking about their writing and giving them suggestions on it.
- Do not take writing as a chore. If you take writing as a difficult task that has to be done, then it is quite likely that you will not enjoy it. But if you learn to enjoy the process of writing, then you will find the experience of writing become much easier, pleasurable and satisfying for you.
Happy writing! :D
Agreed! The first two points are especially useful tips for writers to learn. Also, looking back on your writings is a very true, yet not so obvious, point you have highlighted here that I also personally find very helpful - it's always good to have that positive boost where you remember that you are in fact improving every day you write. A few points I would like to share as well are 1) to write down an idea as soon as you have it (I've often had moments where I knew I had a perfect idea but it has lost its energy as I didn't write it down) 2) to overcome writer's block, just write about anything that comes to mind 3) as you write, avoid going back on what you are writing until you finish and 4) drafts are always flawed for everyone, they just need time ... maybe they're helpful too? :) Thanks for sharing these Fatima, they're super useful points to remember!
